NOC-K delays elections after Basketball chair Paul Otula's death

NOC-K President Paul Tergat announced the decision in a virtual meeting of the Committee's executive, noting that the exercise, originally slated for April 24, will be suspended until after Otula's internment.

The National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) has delayed the release of new election dates following the tragic death of Kenya Basketball Federation Chairman Paul Otula, who passed away on May 1.

NOC-K President Paul Tergat announced the decision in a virtual meeting of the Committee's executive, noting that the exercise, originally slated for April 24, will be suspended until after Otula's internment.

"We shall meet after Otula's burial to set the dates for the elections," said NOC-K Secretary General Francis Mutuku, who has declared his candidacy for the NOC-K Presidency and is set to face off against Kenya Judo Federation President Shadrack Maluki.

The executive also deliberated on several ongoing court cases that contributed to the postponement of the elections.

The Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF), Kenya Handball Federation (KHF) and Triathlon Kenya (TK) currently have active cases before the Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT), which were brought up during the tribunal's session on Tuesday afternoon.

KVF President Charles Nyaberi and KHF Chairman Francis Paul have moved to the tribunal seeking orders to be recognised as the sole voting delegates for their respective federations.

This has caused internal wrangles within KVF after the federation nominated Moses Mbuthia, who is vying for the treasurer's position as its voting delegate, while Nyaberi also put himself forward for the same role.

The NOC-K Constitution states that only federation presidents or chairpersons are allowed to vote in the elective assembly, which disqualifies Mbuthia.

Nyaberi supports Maluki's camp, which has nominated KVF Chairperson Waweru Mududa for the women's representative position. On the other hand, Mbuthia is running as an independent candidate.

At the Kenya Handball Federation, Chairman Francis Paul and Secretary General Nderitu Gikaria are in conflict over who has the right to vote on behalf of the federation. Gikaria is also running for a seat on the NOC-K executive committee.

Both the NOC-K Constitution and the 2025 Election Regulations still leave open the question of exactly who is eligible to vote for each federation.

"Nominations are only valid if signed by both the president and/or secretary general of the respective federation," reads section 17.4 of the NOC-K Constitution.

Additionally, Article 5.2 of the 2025 Election Regulations says that each federation should send two delegates. One of them must be either the president or the secretary general, and that person can vote—but only if both top officials sign a letter naming them as the voting delegate.
